Why does my Ubuntu Software Center not work? [closed]

How do I fix a “Problem with MergeList” error when trying to do an update?

I've been having trouble with my Software Center. Whenever I try to open it, or even do an apt-get in the terminal I get this message:

Reading package lists... Error!

E: Encountered a section with no Package: header

E: Problem with MergeList /var/lib/apt/lists/security.ubuntu.com_ubuntu_dists_precise-security_restricted_binary-i386_Packages

E: The package lists or status file could not be parsed or opened.

How do I fix it? Note: I'm new to Ubuntu. I need simple instructions for the moment.
